In 1983, Research Armament Industries (RAI) in the United States began development of a new, long-range sniper cartridge capable of firing a 16.2-gram (250 gr), 0.338-inch (8.6 mm) diameter bullet at 914 metres per second (3,000 ft/s), that could lethally penetrate five layers of military body armor at 1,000 m (1,094 yd). After preliminary experiments, a .416 Rigby case necked down to take a 0.338-inch (8.6 mm) bullet was selected, since this diameter presents an optimum of sectional density and penetrating capability for practical spin-stabilized rifle bullets (bullets up to about 5 to 5.5 calibers in length).
The current .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge was developed as a joint venture between the Finnish rifle manufacturer SAKO and the British rifle manufacturer Accuracy International, along with the Finnish ammunition manufacturer Lapua, or more officially Nammo Lapua Oy, which since 1998 is part of the Nordic Ammunition Group (Nammo).
Extremely thick-walled brass results in a 7.40 ml (114 grains H2O) cartridge case capacity for the .338 Lapua Magnum. The exterior shape of the case was designed to promote reliable feeding and extraction in bolt action, semi-automatic, and automatic firearms alike, under extreme conditions.
.338 Lapua Magnum maximum C.I.P. cartridge dimensions. All sizes in millimeters (mm).
Product Info for Hornady Precision Hunter .338 Lapua Magnum 270 Grain Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding Centerfire Rifle Ammunition
Accuracy and terminal performance are the cornerstones of Hornady Precision Hunter? factory loaded ammunition. Great care has been given by Hornady engineers to develop superior match-accurate hunting loads that allow the ELD-X? bullet to achieve its maximum ballistic potential. Propellants used in the Precision Hunter? ammunition line are clean burning and loaded to uniform capacity for consistent shot to shot results regardless of temperature. This attention to detail provides the highest levels of accuracy and performance uniformity for the most demanding and diverse hunting situations. Featuring the radically superior ELD-X? bullet with patent-pending Heat Shield? tip Precision Hunter? is the ideal load for ANY hunting situation because of its effective terminal performance at ALL practical ranges. Features: Best-in-class BCs- Verified by Doppler radar the Heat Shield? tip defies the effects of aerodynamic heating and retains its shape to maintain the highest in-class BC over its entire trajectory. Match accurate hunting bullet- Streamlined secant ogive with optimum boattail design + highly concentric AMP bullet jackets + patent pending Heat Shield? tip combine for radically superior aerodynamic efficiency. Devastating conventional range performance- With high velocity 0-400 yard impact the bullet continually expands throughout its penetration path. The thick shank of the jacket and high Interlock ring keep the core and jacket together providing 50-60% weight retention. Best extended range terminal performance available- Upon low velocity 400+ yard impacts the Heat Shield? tip drives backward into the bullet to initiate expansion. Exhibiting expansion with a large mushroom and 85-90% retained weight the bullet provides deep penetration and large cavities. Available as component bullets or in factory loaded Precision Hunter? ammunition.
